Have you ever considered your life a journey? To describe it in this way has become cliché. But there is nothing cliché about you! Because God created you in His image and loved you so much that He gave His only Son Jesus to die for your sins, each of you is a precious, unique creation of God. He treasures you beyond imagining, and He has given your life infinite worth.
My personal motto is “a life worth living is worth recording.” Is my life worthy because of who I am? No. But because God loves me, my life has great significance. My life is so valuable to God that one of the most important things I can do is to journal my journey with Him.
Both the words journal and journey derive from the French word jour, which means day. Journaling is a day-to-day chronicling of one’s life journey, embracing its various vicissitudes—its trials and triumphs, griefs and joys, solitude and sorority, fracture and fullness, barrenness and bounty, status quo and surprise, mundaneness and magnificence. In the Christian life, both the destination and the journey are important. Our destiny is heaven, but how we live for God, as we journey there, matters much to Him. The Bible calls our journey a pilgrimage, which elevates it to a sacred search, an exalted exploration.
In Psalm 84, the psalmist attests, “Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage. . . . They go from strength to strength.” They go in strength because their strength is in the Lord. He alone will give you strength for your journey, through His Word, His people, and your prayer. As a fellow pilgrim and virtual traveling companion, it is my prayer to be able to help you along the way. Unpacking a suitcase of journaling suggestions, I will gently guide writers and non-writers alike on your own personal path of growth, healing, creativity, and enrichment. Once you have established the foundational habit of journaling and discovered its incredible joys, I hope you will want to continue your journey of exploring God’s heart and yours for a lifetime. But as an ancient proverb states, “a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” So, dear ones, pack your journal and pen, set your heart on pilgrimage, and let’s begin!
